Thank you, Pat!

Today, a legendary coach is announcing her retirement from the game of basketball.  Patricia Head Summit is the all-time winningest coach in basketball history–men’s or women’s.  She coached the Tennessee Lady Vols to 1,098 wins (against just 208 losses), 8 national championships, and 18 Final Four appearances.  Her teams have been to the NCAA tournament every year of its existence (38), and she has never had a losing season.  Most impressive to me is what she accomplished off the court.  Every player...

Easter 2012 Revu

Monday, April 9, 2012

Here are some of the highlights from Easter 2012 at River Oaks Church: We had our largest Easter attendance ever! Why?  Our people really had been praying and inviting their friends to attend for weeks. We baptized 5 more people. Joy and I led a lady to Christ in the lobby after the second service! We had several decisions to follow Christ in both services.  We are still processing them at this time. Allen Morrell and the worship team had the place rocking, especially with “God Is in the House.” We kicked...

Small Groups Pastors Coaching Network

Thursday, May 12, 2011

Everyone needs a coach.  Whether it’s a golfer trying to improve their swing, or a CEO trying to lead a company into an uncertain future.  Even pastors need strategic outsiders to come alongside them at certain seasons and help them navigate their growth challenges. How would you like to learn from a seasoned pastor at a growing church where 70% of their adult worship attenders are involved in a small group?   We don’t have all the answers, for sure, but we have learned over the past 11 years how to connect...

Doing Life Together

Tuesday, April 19, 2011

One of the best things about being in a small group is getting to “do life” together.  And part of doing life together is spending time together outside of group meeting nights.  Here are some ideas that will help people get to know each other better: Make ice cream, popcorn, or pizza Have a cook-out or make a meal together Play board games like Scattergories, the Ungame, Cranium, or Apples-to-Apples Go on a hike or fly a kite Watch a movie Go bowling, rollerblading, ice skating, or go-karting Take a road trip...

Communion in Small Groups

Monday, April 11, 2011

Sharing communion in your small group is a powerful experience.  It builds community by remembering what Jesus has done for us at Calvary. Here are some suggestions for making communion a sacred, special time for the group: You will need the following items: a music player, a plate, bread, a wine glass, grape juice (I know, I know, Jesus was drinking wine at the Last Supper, but because this might be a problem for some people in your group, please stick to the Welch’s.) Before the group arrives, go ahead and fill...

Love Specifically

LoveAction

I was talking with my friend Casey Graham recently, and he was telling me about his last conversation with Billy Hornsby, founder of ARC (Association of Related Churches), a church planting organization in North America.  When Casey asked Billy what the best piece of wisdom he could give him was, Billy said without hesitation, “Love specifically.”  Love those around you in specific, meaningful ways to them. Wow!  Billy’s words really started the wheels turning in my mind... Read More

The Fridge & Faith

fridge

I just read this sad story about the wasted life of William “The Fridge” Perry, former star football player with the Chicago Bears: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/playoffs/2010/news/story?id=6091766 At one time, his immense talent and bigger-than-life personality had him sitting on top of the world as a Super Bowl champion and a much sought-after celebrity with numerous endorsement deals. Today, he is nearly broke and broken by an inability to conquer his addiction to alcohol.... Read More
